COLLECTING THE EMERGING SYMPOSIUM
Friday: 12.30–9 pm
Collecting the Emerging is a two-day symposium with academics, curators, collectors and artists to examine issues around collecting new and experimental art. With ever increasing interest in and opportunities for artists in the early stages of their careers, this event will investigate what the term 'emerging' means in relationship to contemporary art and its wider historical context. Discussions will cover economic and aesthetic value in the emerging art market; explore emerging practice and its relationship to historical narratives, archives and taxonomies; and consider how the current enthusiasm for collecting contemporary art impacts on practices that are still at a formative stage.
Speakers include: Edward Allington (Professor of Fine Art, Slade School of Fine Art, UCL); Louisa Buck (independent critic / Contemporary Art Correspondent, The Art Newspaper); Leah Capaldi (artist); JJ Charlesworth (independent critic / Associate Editor, ArtReview); Dr. Ben Cranfield (Director, Doctoral Programme in Humanities and Cultural Studies, School of Arts, Birkbeck); Matthew Darbyshire (artist / Lecturer, Slade School of Fine Art, UCL); Attilia Fattori Franchini (independent curator / Co-Founder, Open Times – Digital Art Commissions); Chris Hammond (Director, MOT International / Lecturer, MFA Curating, Goldsmiths College); Vincent Honoré (Director, David Roberts Art Foundation); Kelly Large (Public Programme Curator, Zabludowicz Collection); Maitreyi Maheshwari (Programme Director, Zabludowicz Collection); Ellen Mara De Wachter (independent curator / writer); Coline Milliard (independent writer / Associate Director, Carroll/Fletcher); Kirsty Ogg (Director, Bloomberg New Contemporaries / Lecturer, MFA Curating, Goldsmiths College); Dr. Nina Pearlman (Manager, UCL Art Museum); Niru Ratnam (Director, START Art Fair / Director, Prudential Eye Programme); Sarah Thelwall (Creative and Cultural Industries Strategist); Dr. Timotheus Vermeulen (Assistant Professor, Cultural Theory, Radboud University / Co-Founding Editor, Notes on Metamodernism) and Jenny Wedgbury (Learning and Access Officer, UCL Art Museum).
This event is a partnership between Zabludowicz Collection and UCL Art Museum. It accompanies Zabludowicz Collection: 20 Years, an exhibition celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Zabludowicz Collection which includes significant and rarely seen works by over 30 leading artists, and Re-Launch, a show that marks the reopening of UCL's Art Museum's main space after a programme of improvements. This presents a selection of existing, newly commissioned and site specific artworks in collaboration with Slade artists created in response to the collections and the theme of re-launch.
The symposium will take place at UCL, with a live event by artist Laura Buckley at Zabludowicz Collection on Friday 22 May, 7–9 pm. The event will be accompanied by refreshments and a special preview of Zabludowicz Collection: 20 Years.
Advance booking essential.
The event will also be streamed live by this is tomorrow:
